The Ministry of Education has released a final and much improved iteration of the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 following consultation with key stakeholders earlier this year.

The revised Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 comes into effect on 1 January 2022, and sets out the expectations that tertiary education organisations and schools enrolling international students must meet for learners’ safety and wellbeing.

TEU and NZ Union of Student Associations have been fully involved with the sector advisory group that oversaw the consultation process and changes to the draft code, and were successful in significantly informing and improving the final iteration.

TEU National President Tina Smith says its important members continue to engage in consultative processes that impact teaching, learning, and the welfare of students and staff in the sector,

‘Where there are opportunities for consultation and co-design, TEU members will always have a voice in matters impacting both staff and students. The new Code of Practice is an important document for the wellbeing of our students and TEU values all opportunities for meaningful consultation’.

TEU will be issuing an advisory on the new Code of Practice in the coming weeks.
